How is the SAT scored?
Each section of the Digital SAT — Reading & Writing and Math — is scored on a 200–800 scale. Your composite score is just the two sections added together, so the range is 400–1600. There is no penalty for wrong answers; only correct answers count.
Because the Digital SAT is multistage-adaptive, the score conversion isn't a single fixed table — there are different tables depending on which Module 2 difficulty you were routed to (easier or harder). Our calculator uses the average across published practice-test tables, so your real score may land within ~20–30 points of our estimate.
Worked example
If you got 40 right on Reading & Writing and 35 right on Math, your scaled scores might be about 680 + 700 = 1380. That's around the 92nd percentile nationally — strong enough for selective state schools and competitive for many flagship universities.
When to use this calculator
Use it after taking an official Digital SAT practice test to gauge where you stand. The score you get here approximates what you'd see if you took the same test on test day. Don't confuse this with PSAT scoring (the PSAT goes to 1520, not 1600, with a slightly different conversion).
1200+ is competitive for most colleges, 1350+ for selective schools, 1450+ for highly selective (top 50), and 1500+ puts you in striking range of Ivies. National average hovers around 1050.
Is the Digital SAT scored the same as the old paper SAT?
Same 400–1600 scale and roughly the same percentile equivalence. But the Digital SAT is shorter (2 hours 14 min vs ~3 hours) and adaptive — Module 2 difficulty depends on Module 1. The raw-to-scaled conversion table is different.
Is there a wrong-answer penalty?
No. Like the post-2016 paper SAT, the Digital SAT has no penalty for wrong answers. Always guess — even random guessing has a 25% chance of being right per question.
What about the SAT Essay?
The optional SAT Essay was discontinued in June 2021 along with SAT Subject Tests. Today's Digital SAT has no essay component.
How much can I improve with retakes?
Most students gain 30–80 points on a retake after structured prep. Diminishing returns kick in above 1450. Three sittings is typical; more than four signals it's time to focus on other parts of your application.
